Practical Organizing Solutions: Release the feelings of guilt

Do you have items that were given to you and feel compelled to keep them because of the person that gave them to you? Do you think they would be upset if you didn’t need or want their gift? Well, you aren’t alone. Many people keep things that they don’t want or need because of the connection to the gift giver. That includes items accumulated from loved ones that have passed away.

There doesn’t need to be shame in not wanting or needing something that is a gift. We can’t all be the best gift givers. Of course, be thankful to the giver anyway but don’t exaggerate liking it if you don’t. Be gracious.

There is a better way to think about the things that are not being used or are taking up space due to the guilt of disappointing someone else. A lot of times the gift giver doesn’t even remember that they gave you a specific item. Each situation is unique. Think about new ways that could give purpose to the items you no longer want or need.

If you want to find a new home for some items, there are multiple ways to go about that task. If you have new items that haven’t even been used or opened, try to think about who you could regift the items to. Is there a birthday or holiday coming up? Maybe one of the items would be a perfect gift for someone you know.

There are so many organizations out there that will gladly accept your donations. Search for the ones that are the best fit for you. If you are having issues with anxiety due to the overabundance of stuff in your space, consider an organization that you can get the items to quickly. Goodwill is not always my first choice of places to donate to but it is a very easily accessible location to get items removed from your space quickly. If you have the time, you may even be able to schedule a pick up with Am Vets, Paralyzed Veterans, Habitat for Humanity Restore, or so many others.

If selling is more what you would prefer to do, there are multiple opportunities for that as well. Look for local consignment stores like Play It Again Sports, Once Upon A Child, or a local women’s clothing boutique. Facebook Marketplace, E-Bay, garage sale sites, and other sale platforms could be the best choice for you and your stuff. Sometimes the amount of time and energy that it takes to sell something is not worth the added stress.

Remember that your home and the items in it really do affect your overall feelings of stress or calm. It is definitely okay to ask for help as well. Your stuff should not define you.

With time, patience, and practice; you can learn how to let go of the guilt and shame of living a cluttered space and create that calm sanctuary that you have always wanted.
